Pink Matter
8.14.14
I had the pleasure of doing my 2nd commissioned art piece this past weekend in San Franciso at my friend Susan's house where she lives with her husband and her two adorable kids. I had met Susan 4 months prior to making the piece and listened to a bit of her stories (past, present, and the hopeful future) and so I want to personalized it but still keep it artful. I wanted to incorporate all of the 4 family members. Imagine being able to say: Hey we'll have fresh art to hang up on the wall tonight? That's fucking dope! Not a print out of a piece in the museum, but an actual freshly made commissioned art piece.
Spent a cathartic 3 days excursion with this piece, (8 hours session each day). I barely left the room, it was like a creative meditation. Just me, the canvas, and my intentions. Simple moves with deep ideas.
You'll see her daughter Scout making an appearance in some of the photos as she was really curious if I was drawing "ghosts" but I said “No, it is digital sunflowers! I want you guys to be like flowers and watered by knowledge, so you can grow together!”

“PINK MATTER”
August 2014
—
The pink box acts as the central and important aspect of this piece. Dusty muted pink mimicking the brain’s color, knowledge, thoughts. The shapes or “matter” then gets filtered through the pink box, and depending on the viewer’s perspective, left to right is calm to chaos, and right to left is chaos transforming into peace of mind. Regardless of which way, every time the matters get filtered, it rains down “pink rain” or “new understandings” on each member of the family that’s growing out of the gridded platform like flowers—digital sunflowers. A rain of knowledge from filtering mistakes into lessons, pain into hope, and ultimately helping the family grow... together.
