For my 28th birthday, I treated myself a 4-day weekend road trip through New Mexico and West Texas in particularly to visit White Sands National Monument in New Mexico and stay at El Cosmico in Marfa, Texas. El Cosmico is a now becoming my humble haven — it's a hotel/camping ground with tents, tepees, and trailers out in the Texan desert so you get to sleep under the Milky Way every night.
I got my little sister with me on the road, this was our first road trip ever away from home. It was a beautiful trip besides some small mishaps; but that's life you know? Growing up in Vietnam we watched a lot of western movies; thinking the roads were paved with gold... and that has built an image of what freedom looks like to me. But living here now in the west for past 18 years; freedom is all in the mind. Yes it's wonderful to be physically free, but learning how to be free within your confinement is the real lesson — that's what the road teaches me: to keep pressing that gas pedal with optimism.
It's always necessary to go back into the wild every so often, to remind ourselves what we're made of.
