Imelda Rauschenberg
8.8.12
Even though I haven't yet find a full time job, I've managed to keep myself busy. This latest project was a commissioned graphic art piece that I did for my friend Nicole Ponseca who is the owner of a Filipino restaurant here in the East Village called Maharlika Filipino Moderno. She recently just moved into a new place — and by recent I mean 5 days ago! She commissioned another friend of mine Bobbie Yanoupeth who is a hairstylist extraordinaire to decorate her new living space and now he's flexing his interior design muscles – which makes him an all around life-stylist. It's all about coming together to be 1 great entity; multiplying, not dividing.
Since this art piece will be in an apartment under a strong young Filipino woman, I thought why not use Imelda Marcos as the inspiration? And throw in one of my favorite artists, Robert Rauschenberg's style of mixed media / graphic + paint. I chose Imelda because aside from all the controversy, she is still an influential woman. Being behind her leader husband, I thought that she sometimes have to hold back what she really wants to say hence the right canvas covering the mouth, and what she really thinks on the left canvas exposing the brain. I love the iconic female empowerment image, and that subtle irony of what we think versus what we actually say. I appreciate her extravagant and dramatic lifestyle. Because she knows that when it's done, IT'S DONE. You just have to enjoy it while you can. She sure did.
We wanted to a mural but without the hassle of length so we bought 2 canvases that can join together and make 1, and it'll be easier to move around. It's been 2 years since I touched a paint brush, or a canvas, and I almost forgot how nice it felt to be creative again.
